the other day i came out of wallmart & went to my truck. an older
lady came up to me & said i have been waiting for you to come out.
she said that she had a CCT sticker just like mine on her car.
Mrs.Stacy introduced herself & told me her Grandson had been in
CCT. as we talked i found out he had graduated with my son from a
Catholic military school here in Savannah, Ga. i told here how proud
she should of him, only very special men are CCTers & never take that sticker off of
her car. i only know of myself & John Eddington living here in Sav.

I knew Joe D Willard at Travis. He was the first E-8 I had ever seen.
One time I got in trouble for driving the Rough Terrain Loader on
Wilton DZ...I overheated the engine and burned out the seals. I
reported back to the section and Joe D grabbed his hat and said "follow
me..." Of course E-4's always follow E-8's. We went across the street
to the Commanders office, where I got to explain my stupidity. I was
excused and told to wait outside. What ensued, I have never since seen
or heard happen. After a little while, the Commander's secretary and I
could hear Joe D and the Commander "talking" at a high volume thru the
door. It became obvious that the Commander wanted to Court Marshall me
but in a loud voice, Joe D told the Commander that I was his problem
and he would handle it his way. Things got quiet for a few minutes,
then Joe D appeared and said "Follow me...." I did and got a week of
KP, and 23 days of extra duty, repainted all the Aerial Delivery
parachute packing lanes, missed a mile high static line jump, painted
about 40 wall lockers, and various other things. But, what Joe D did at
the end of it was all Joe D's class. He assembled the whole team and
said we all know Collins screwed up, but he don't want to hear anyone
talk about it again or outside the section. That ended that. I never
forgot that and when I became an E-8, I always tried to remember, it is
the job of the Senior NCOs to take care of their people because it's
they who get the job done.
